Study showed that the convention of yearly dilated eye exam screening can be individually tailored, depending on the initial severity of the retinopathy in individuals with type 1 diabetes. Those with no signs of retinopathy may be evaluated every 4 years, those with mild retinopathy every 3 years, moderate every 6 months and severe every 3 months. This may result in fewer examinations in some individuals and still retain the ability to treat and prevent worsening of diabetic eye disease.
